Australia’s newest premier food and drink event, Savour The Tweed, will be held from 30 October to 3 November 2024, shining a light on The Tweed’s culinary excellence and unparalleled food and drink provenance in stunning settings across the northern New South Wales region.

The inaugural five-day celebration of The Tweed’s rich gourmet offerings will feature a program of curated events to champion the region’s local produce and those who bring it to life, from First Nations storytellers and passionate chefs to talented distillers, brewers and baristas, cheesemakers and farmers and an endless list of artisan producers.

Savour The Tweed will feature a stunning program of 20 distinctive events featuring local and visiting chefs with highlights including a First Nations welcome dinner and native food foraging, farm to fork menus and wild-caught seafood lunch, plus events showcasing healthy and sustainable food practices and ethical farming.

The program is co-curated by Tweed-based chef and author Christine Manfield and local food advocate Amy Colli of Straight To The Source and will highlight the diversity and prominence of The Tweed as one of Australia’s leading food and drink destinations with farm tours, distillery and brewery masterclasses, long table lunches, storytelling, cooking classes and local degustations.

Christine Manfield said the program aimed to unearth the distinctive ‘terroir’ of the region by showcasing locally sourced seasonal produce and native ingredients and The Tweed’s host of talented chefs and food and drink artisans.

Savour The Tweed will be a signature regional event, created from the ground up, and I’m so excited to be collaborating with The Tweed’s impressive line-up of food and drink producers, leading chefs and cultural storytellers to celebrate the distinctive flavours and character of the region and to offer a program of immersive experiences,” Ms Manfield said.

“The Tweed’s growing profile as one of Australia’s leading culinary destinations is testament to the creative vision and hard work of the region’s chefs, restaurateurs, growers, distillers, brewers, food producers and First Nations talent who will all feature throughout the event program.”

Sally Scott, General Manager of The Tweed Tourism Company, said Savour The Tweed was an exciting addition to the region’s annual tourism events calendar.

“As a five-day event, Savour The Tweed is the perfect long-weekend getaway for foodies who also want to experience The Tweed’s holiday highlights including the Tweed Regional Gallery and Northern Rivers Rail Trail in the hinterland to surf lessons and snorkelling with turtles from our seaside villages.”

Savour The Tweed is a partnership between Tweed Shire Council and The Tweed Tourism Company to boost regional tourism.

Mayor of Tweed Shire Chris Cherry said the event would provide the perfect opportunity to celebrate the Tweed’s incredible fresh food offering.

Savour the Tweed is a key investment by Council to host a signature event that showcases our region and highlights our culinary strengths,” Cr Cherry said.

“At Council we have aimed to carefully nurture the Tweed’s burgeoning agritourism sector over many years, culminating in what promises to be a fantastic food event in Savour The Tweed.

“Events make the Tweed a great place to live and visit and we are proud to deliver Savour The Tweed with our event partners. This exciting new offering is part of our new Tweed Events Strategy which will be on public exhibition in coming weeks.”

Savour The Tweed will be delivered as an inclusive and eco-friendly event with a focus on accessibility considerations for all eventgoers and alignment with EarthCheck’s Responsible Events Management action steps.

A strong line-up of international and Australian speakers has been announced for the 26th Australian Cruise Association Conference (ACA) and AGM to be held from 4-6 September in Adelaide, SA.

With new opportunities and challenges on the horizon for the cruise industry, the conference, to be held at SkyCity Adelaide, will be themed “Steering Ideas to Success.”

“As we look towards the next phase of the exciting and ever-changing cruise market in our region, we need to be open to ideas that continue to advance cruise as a sustainable and vital pillar of Australia’s visitor economy,” said Jill Abel, CEO of the Australian Cruise Association. “This year’s conference sessions will be all about inviting robust discussion and sharing of ideas with our membership and cruise community, that will ultimately steer us toward continuing success.”

Highly influential cruise line executives join our 2024 program including Jessica Ashe, Director, Shore Excursions & Future Cruises, Holland America Group and Chad Berkshire, EVP and Chief Commercial Officer, Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings. These international delegates will be joined by Gavin Smith (Royal Caribbean International), Ben Angell (Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings), Tim Jones (Celebrity Cruises) and Peter Little (Carnival Cruise Lines) and Chair, CLIA Australasia.

Individual and panel sessions will centre on current topics such as ongoing governance and regulatory issues as well as supply chain issues and opportunities. A focus will also be placed on destination development including a panel session as well as what promises to be a highly informative presentation by Mark Koolmatrie – Founder of Kool Tours. A regional outlook will be provided by Leigh Howard from Tourism Fiji building on ACA’s commitment to the importance of working closely with neighbouring destinations.

The final day of the Conference will kick off with a motivational breakfast at the Playford Hotel followed by the AGM and Member Roundtable session.

“We are excited to be holding our Conference in South Australia this year to reflect the incredible growth of the cruise industry in that region and the commitment of the state government and Flinders Port Holdings in fostering new opportunities” noted Abel.

While The Rebound Continues, Canada Looks Ahead https://www.traveltalkmag.com.au/whilst-the-rebound-continues-canada-looks-ahead/ Sun, 19 May 2024 00:24:45 +0000 https://www.traveltalkmag.com.au/?p=53656 Destination Canada took the opportunity of Rendez-vous Canada to launch their new strategy: A World of Opportunity.

As more flights return and travel nears pre-pandemic levels, Canada is seizing the moment to redefine its tourism sector. On May 16, 2024, Destination Canada unveiled its ambitious new strategy, “A World of Opportunity,” at the premier international tourism marketplace, Rendez-vous Canada, held in Edmonton. This comprehensive strategy aims to propel Canada into the top seven global tourism destinations by 2030, targeting an annual revenue generation of CAD$160 billion. The new strategy aims to deliver CAD$450 million per day from tourism, compared to the current CAD$300 million per day.

“In a world of isolation, tourism is about connection,” said The Honorable Soraya Martinez Ferrada, Federal Minister of Tourism in speaking about the new tourism strategy. “We’re investing in tourism growth by supporting small and medium businesses across the country.”

Marsha Walden, CEO of Destination Canada, stated that Canada has been slipping in global competitiveness since 2009. Despite forecasts showing Canadian tourism outperforming the Canadian economy, it is falling behind the global tourism economy. Tourism is vital to the Canadian economy, supporting more than 234,000 businesses and employing 1 in 10 people. In 2021, Canada was the 13th global tourism destination. To push it into the top seven, Canada needs to be seen as a year-round destination and a ‘must-see’ rather than a ‘someday’ destination.

Marsha Walden speaking at RVC 2024

The strategy will use five guiding principles: Collaboration, Prosperity, Public Support, Regeneration, and Reconciliation, underscoring four key pillars designed to foster transformative growth in the tourism sector:

  1. Sector Advancement | A Competitive Canada: Enhancing competitiveness by leveraging seven strategic levers identified through industry consultations.
  2. Brand Leadership | Driving the Brand: Developing a sustainable and balanced tourism landscape by targeting specific demographics and dispersing tourists geographically to enhance seasonality and local opportunities.
  3. Destination Development | Propelling Investment and Supply: Collaborating with communities to create long-term development plans, improve infrastructure, and meet both guest expectations and local needs.
  4. Collective Intelligence | Leading with Data: Expanding access to data and insights to empower businesses to compete globally (Destination Canada) (Newswire) (Destination Canada).

Meanwhile, what does this mean for Australia?

  • Australia is one of Canada’s key international markets (along with the USA, Mexico, Germany, France, UK, China, Korea, and Japan).
  • Many Australians travel in the Northern Hemisphere winter – Canada’s low season – making Australians a more attractive market during this period.
  • Many Canadian operators are looking for ways to raise awareness with and attract Australians to their locations and away from the more visited destinations in British Columbia, Alberta and Quebec.

This strategy reflects Canada’s commitment to reinvigorating its tourism sector by 2030, emphasizing collaboration, sustainable growth, and data-driven decision-making to position itself as a top global destination.
